Wanting to stand out from the crowd in a competitive market, Gopi Devaraj, Unit Head in transaction banking for the Commercial Bank of Dubai, decided to complete the Certificate in International Cash Management to complement his expertise in trade finance.

Here he answers a few questions about his story and experience studying with the ACT, explaining how the course has been a valuable asset to have for his career.

What does your current role entail? 

I am currently a Unit Head in transaction banking for the Commercial Bank of Dubai. I am responsible for managing trade finance, cash management, and supply chain finance for the bank. 

My current role requires me to develop and deliver sale strategies for a range of corporate and institutional clients, across various industry verticals.

The role spans various responsibilities, including advising, sales, and shaping the digital strategy for the business.

Which qualification have you completed and what was your main objective for studying this ACT qualification? 

I have completed the Certificate in International Cash Management (CertICM). I decided to study for this qualification, as the learning material covered essential topics that were relevant to my role. It has helped me understand cash management from the corporate perspective, which will lead to structuring solutions effectively. 

I currently manage the trade and working capital business for the bank.

This qualification has provided me with in-depth knowledge of trade finance, cash management, risk management, accounting and tax regulations that are essential to my role.

Are there particular areas of treasury/finance that this qualification helped you understand even better? 

The qualification helped me better understand liquidity management, payable and receivable structures, the impact of accounting, and tax and regulations on cash management structures.

What are the benefits of having professional qualifications to add to your CV/résumé?

The CertICM is an internationally recognised certification within the banking industry. The course has increased my knowledge and taught me new skills, therefore expanding my horizons. It’s a valuable asset to have in my CV. It sets you apart from the crowd and is essential for candidates seeking senior management roles in the banking industry.

Do you hold any other professional qualifications? If so, how does it/do they complement your ACT qualification? 

I am certified in trade finance (CDCS) and supply chain finance (CSCF) from LIBF, UK. The CertICM stands out as the top cash management certification in the industry, and it perfectly complements my expertise in trade finance.
